On a mission to make everything he wears: Q&A, Dan Stumpf, Global Compensation Consultant

If you ask anyone, one of the most fulfilling parts of working at FinancialForce is without a doubt the people. Our vibrant culture is built from a wide range of talent from all over the globe, each person brings a unique personality and background to the mix.

One of those people is Dan Stumpf, Global Compensation Consultant based in the San Francisco office. If you know Dan, you know he’s a great dresser, but until recently, what we didn’t know was that he actually designs and makes the majority of his own clothes! It’s a passion of Dan’s that’s been in the making for years and earlier this summer, he sat down with KQED to share more about what inspires his fashion design and how he got started.

[embedyt]https://youtu.be/ygzAWoOvuzk[/embedyt]

I interviewed Dan recently to chat about his KQED profile and to learn a bit more. Check out the Q&A below:

Allie: First off, can you give us a brief overview of your background and role at FinancialForce?

Dan: I started in May 2016 as a Global Compensation Consultant on FinancialForce’s Employee Success team. I help research, analyze, plan and design all of our non-sales compensation plans. I really enjoy the challenge of taking large amounts of data and applying that to a practical solution.

Allie: For those who didn’t catch your KQED profile, how did you first get inspired to design and create clothes?  What keeps you motivated now to continue to make your own outfits?

Dan: I’ve always been interested in standing out from the crowd and about 10 years ago I started taking fashion and style seriously as a way to do just that. I quickly saw that the things I liked (high quality fabrics, attention to detail and great fit) cost a lot more than I was used to spending. I have a bit of a maker gene so the thought that maybe I could make my own clothes became an exciting idea. I borrowed my mom’s old sewing machine and found that the detailed, precision work was right in my wheelhouse. At first it was all about how I could tackle this thing, achieve a certain mastery and make myself some great and wearable clothing. Over time I’ve started to look for ways my passion can grow beyond my own wardrobe and benefit other people. It’s something I’m just beginning to explore so stay tuned!

Allie: In your interview you noted you enjoy wearing your own pieces at work because it “makes me feel like I’m taking a piece of that creativity with me. I can stand out.” It’s so great to hear that you feel comfortable showcasing your clothing at FinancialForce. How important is having that type of inviting company culture to you?

Dan: I believe that diversity can benefit a company’s business and culture so working at a company that also values it is foundational for me. Expressing and celebrating different cultures, skills, points of views, and creativity is rewarding. I love seeing a variety of ages, races and countries represented in the office and I’m glad I can contribute something to that variety with the clothing I create.

Allie: You said that it will probably take you about 5 years to get to the point where you are wearing everything that you have made. How many clothing items have you made so far?

Dan: I’ve made it to the point where I can make shirts, pants, vests, coats and accessories like watchbands, bags and belts. The pattern-making class I attended taught me how to design something from the ground up so I can tackle almost anything I’d want. To get to this point, though, took many hundreds of items. My first goal was a tailored shirt and that alone took close to one hundred tries before I felt good about the result!

Allie: Wow! Talk about perseverance. What pieces are you most excited to tackle next?

Dan: I’m interested in adding functional touches to different tailored pieces. Integrating a tasteful cell phone pocket so you don’t have that bulk in places that are annoying but also have easy access. Pants that look dressy but can be easy to wear while riding a bike. Plus my wife really wants some things too.

Allie: I don’t blame her! You can add me to the list too. Last question, do you have any advice for someone who has an interest in learning how to design and sew? Where should they begin?

Dan: Projects like curtains, simple bags, and other non wearable pieces are not too hard to complete. You can even rent sewing machines so you don’t have to invest a lot until you know it’s going to stick. Plus the internet has lots of great tutorials and templates to get you going. Good luck and most importantly, have fun with it!

Can you believe January 2017 is in the books? It feels like just yesterday we were popping champagne to ring in the New Year.  Last month was truly a whirlwind, action packed with exciting moments like customer wins and news, contributed articles, oh and in case you missed it, we announced a new CEO!

Check out January’s PR Picks below and head over to our press center for a full view of last month’s coverage:

1) “New Year, New CEO!” That’s the saying, right? Early in January we were thrilled to announce that Tod Nielsen has taken the role of FinancialForce CEO and President. The appointment followed another strong year in which we grew more than 40% and are rapidly approaching the $100 million annual revenue run rate milestone. Tod was most recently Executive Vice President of Platform at Salesforce and CEO of Heroku. He is a seasoned leader with a proven record of taking technology companies to the next level by accelerating their innovation and revenue growth. We are excited to have Tod join the family and lead us towards many more years of success. Many publications covered the news including TechCrunch, The Wall Street Journal,  Fortune, Forbes, CRN and more.

2) Also in January we announced that Cincinnati Bell went live on FinancialForce Professional Services Automation (PSA), with 1,400 employees already achieving time savings and productivity gains from the app. Cincinnati Bell SVP and CIO Kevin Murray commented that, “FinancialForce is helping us make fast decisions, and helping our employees maximize their time. We expect our utilization to increase and are looking forward to exploring how FinancialForce can help us streamline processes further, better serve customers and grow as a company.” Enterprise Times, Channele2e and others reported.

3) FinancialForce CFO,  John Bonney, authored a piece for CPA Practice Advisor titled “How Small Accounting Firms Find Big Advantages in the Cloud,” outlining how cloud services can enable CPAs to be strategic partners who can offer more in-depth and timely financial advice to help their small and medium size business clients succeed.

4) Diginomica profiled customer and partner Traction on Demand last month and their unique use of FinancialForce PSA and Salesforce. Traction on Demand is a 250+ person cloud consulting firm who developed a tool called Traction Pulse, a new way to use its existing customer relationship management (CRM), professional services automation (PSA) and marketing applications in order to track employee happiness, increase employee engagement, improve recruiting, and grow the business. Traction on Demand: Winning the war on employee turnover

$

Employee retention is a challenge for any organization. Even the most successful companies can have a difficult time keeping their workforce engaged and satisfied. More than ever before, businesses are making employee health top of mind. In fact, Deloitte’s 2016 Global HR Trends Survey found that an overwhelming majority of those surveyed (85 percent) ranked employee engagement as a top 5 priority for their business.

Traction on Demand, a Salesforce consulting and application development firm, a FinancialForce partner and PSA customer, was recently featured in Diginomica for their unique use of technology to help keep their employees happy. The company has managed to keep talent turnover below an impressive 5% by making sure employees are at least 72% happy in their work. So how do they do it?

Introducing Traction Pulse

When it comes to battling employee turnover, companies try and implement all sorts of strategies – from extra perks and benefits, to expensive training programs. Traction on Demand has taken happiness into their own hands and created Traction Pulse, an internal data collection tool using FinancialForce PSA and Salesforce Wave.

How does it work? As described to Diginomica:

  • Traction’s journey started with a small twist on an existing FinancialForce PSA application, which it was already using to manage team resources, project financials, billing, expenses, and so on. To create something that would add more value to the business and the individual, Traction’s team decided to add two simple drop-down questions to the timesheet interface:
  • What mode of thinking were you in? (e.g. learning, teaching, executing, doing admin activities)
  • How was it? (e.g. amazing, pretty good, mildly painful and brutal).
  • From there they developed a small algorithm to calculate “percentage of happiness” and Traction Pulse was born.

The immediate impact was astounding. With Traction Pulse, executives are able to see the happiness of employees, as well as health of a project instantly, giving the team power to make fast decisions. If an employee is consistently rating a project or activity as painful or brutal, their manager can step in and diffuse any potential turnover warnings.

Traction on Demand’s CEO, Greg Malpass further explained:

When people are having a difficult time or working on a difficult project, rather than shy away from it or hope it works out, I’ll actually go grab people, bring them in the office and ask them what’s going on, what needs to change, and how can we help.

It’s facilitated incredible person-to-person discussions. People are surprised we actually look at the data. It’s driven some interesting career changes because we can see what people enjoy and what they don’t enjoy.

Traction’s innovative use of FinancialForce and Salesforce can be a lesson to us all. Solving turnover issues can be as simple as using technologies already in place to track sentiment and provide insight into what a workforce really needs to succeed. By using technology to listen and learn from employees, executives can quickly make changes and keep their workforce engaged.

FinancialForce kicks off Community Live with strategic vision for the new services economy

Yesterday, FinancialForce revealed its vision for the next generation of service-focused business applications at Community Live in Las Vegas. Built for the new services economy, the strategy is founded on business model agility, time and talent optimization, and predictive insights.

During his keynote, CEO Tod Nielsen declared that software is eating the galaxy. While technology grows at a rapid rate, our challenge is keeping up. “Speed is the new currency in the modern global economy, in which businesses are increasingly retooling to deliver services,” said Tod. “Our flexible and agile ERP solutions accelerate innovation and enable organizations to quickly adapt to trends in the market and emerging business models.”

Key to ERP success is the shift from skepticism to confidence in the cloud. Tod pointed to trust as a key driver of FinancialForce’s success moving forward, saying, “Although trust is the thing that once kept people away from the cloud, it is now the thing that will drive people to the cloud.”

Tod also spoke to the future of the new services economy. Services are no longer an afterthought; their range is as wide as it is diverse. With 70% of CFO’s saying more than half their revenue comes from services, they are impossible to ignore.

Additionally, FinancialForce announced a new strategic HCM partnership with ADP, key product updates to FinancialForce PSA and expanded use of Salesforce Einstein Analytics. The news included:

Customers saw first hand how FinancialForce will empower them to navigate everything from new revenue recognition regulations, HCM and payroll, financial management, billing, to revenue forecasting– all with speed and efficiency.

Today’s announcements validate FinancialForce as the leading services ERP platform and we’ll continue to work closely with customers and partners to shape the next generation of ERP solutions for the Services Economy and beyond.
